Choose the best wood for your custom sauna
The most popular choice for sauna interiors, with that classic sauna scent and a natural, warm tone. Its low density means it heats up fast and doesn't hold heat at the surface, so it stays comfortable to touch even at high temps. Ultra durable, naturally moisture and rot-resistant, and proven to stand up to intense heat cycles, there’s a reason it’s the material of choice for saunas.
Best uses: wall paneling, ceiling, benches, backrests, door frames, exterior siding
Western Red Cedar
A step up in durability from red cedar, with a finer grain, pale yellow tone, and a cleaner, more subtle scent. Denser than red cedar and one of the most rot-resistant woods on the coast — it holds up exceptionally well to direct contact, abrasion, and the repeated heat and moisture cycles a sauna puts wood through. If you want bench surfaces that stay looking good for years, yellow cedar is hard to beat.
Best uses: bench tops and seats, exterior cladding, wall paneling, flooring
Yellow Cedar
Strong, stiff, and dimensionally stable, fir is the right choice anywhere you need load-bearing performance. Not recommended for exposed interior surfaces as it holds heat and doesn't handle sustained moisture as well as cedar over time, but for everything hidden inside the walls it's the workhorse of the build.
Best uses: framing, floor joists, posts and beams, subfloor, exterior decking and structural cladding
Douglas Fir
FAQs
-
Western Red Cedar is our go-to. It's naturally moisture-resistant, stays cooler to the touch than denser woods, and holds up well to the heat cycles a sauna goes through. We also carry Douglas Fir for structural framing.
-
Yes. Bring us a cut list and we'll mill to your specs. We're set up for non-standard dimensions and can work with your exact sauna plans.
-
For interior paneling and benches, yes. Kiln-dried stock is more dimensionally stable and less likely to warp or gap once the heat goes on. We make kiln-dried, finished cedar lumber for saunas on site.
